Tutorial: Annotating your new dataset for existing projects

Welcome to our tutorial! Here, we’ll guide you through the process of annotating a dataset using the Instrument Data Wizard, getting it ready for ingestion into Instrument Data Service.

Imagine yourself in a fictional scenario: You’re Sarah, a PhD student collecting data for your cancer genomics research. You already have projects stored your University’s instrument data repository - Instrument Data Service. Now, you’ve gathered new data and want to add it to your existing projects in the Instrument Data Service.

In this tutorial, we’ll provide step-by-step instructions to help you annotate your new data effectively by using a YAML file downloaded from Instrument Data Service for existing projects.

What is Instrument Data Wizard?

If you’re not familiar with what Instrument Data Service and Instrument Data Wizard do, and how they work together, check out What is Instrument Data Service and Instrument Data Wizard? first.

By the end of this tutorial, you will learn about the Instrument Data Wizard and Instrument Data Service, and how to:

  • download a YAML file for existing projects from Instrument Data Service.

  • import data files into the Instrument Data Wizard and add structure to it.

  • annotate your data with metadata

  • restrict access to your data or subset of the data

  • export the metadata

If you want to follow along on your computer, please install Instrument Data Wizard, download the tutorial data, and unzip it on your desktop. This data and ingestion.yaml file will be used in the rest of the tutorial.
